How professional tax works

Professional tax is a state-level direct tax on income from profession, levied by 28 of India's 29 states. The slabs differ by state. Most states levy a flat amount per slab, capped at ₹2,500 per year per the Constitution.

Employers deduct PT monthly from employee salary and remit it to the state government on a periodic basis (usually monthly or half-yearly, varying by state).

Why the half-yearly rule matters

Several states (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra) split the financial year into two halves with potentially different remittance windows. Tamil Nadu's window is the most common source of confusion.

Get the half wrong and the remittance is rejected, often weeks after the cycle. Validate the half and the slab together.

Recent rate changes

Q1 2026 saw four states move slabs: Maharashtra raised the upper bracket threshold, Karnataka added a new slab at the lower end, Tamil Nadu adjusted the half-yearly window, and West Bengal made minor boundary changes.

The calculator is updated to the latest circulars. See our PT slab change post for details on each.

Frequently asked questions

Which state is exempt from PT?

Most union territories and one state (currently Delhi) do not levy professional tax. The list is updated as states change their position; the calculator handles the current list.

Does PT apply to consultants and contractors?

PT is levied on income from profession, so it can apply to consultants who meet the slab threshold. Treatment varies by state; consult the state-specific notification or your tax counsel.

How is PT remitted?

Through the state's commercial-tax portal, in either monthly or half-yearly cycles depending on state. Employers issue a TDS certificate annually showing the cumulative PT deduction.
